About the Spuyten Duyvil 10K

Come swim with us in the mighty Hudson River! The current‑assisted 10 km route starts at JFK Marina in Yonkers and finishes at the Inwood Canoe Club in Manhattan, guiding swimmers through the storied Spuyten Duyvil, where the Harlem River meets the Hudson. Along the way you’ll enjoy sweeping views of Yonkers, Riverdale, the Spuyten Duyvil Bridge, and the George Washington Bridge. This beloved event, an old favorite from 2016–2018, is now revived as a purely fun swim for all, this time with no timing or swim‑attire requirements, though all swimmers are required to wear a swim buoy.

The name “Spuyten Duyvil” (Dutch for “spite of the devil”) dates back to 17th‑century settlers and refers either to a lost messenger who tried to swim these wild waters or to a powerful freshwater spring known as the Devil’s Spout.

Course Description

  • Swimmers enter from the kayak dock at the north end of JFK Marina in waves of 10–40 every five minutes.
  • Head west briefly, circle a buoy, then swim south along the eastern Hudson shore for 10 km.
  • At Inwood Canoe Club, turn left around the final buoy and exit via a ladder.
  • The current assists at ~1 mph; swim angels and safety repositioning may be used as needed.
