What is a Swim Angel? Do you have Swim Angels for this race? If so, how do I become one or request one?

A swim angel is an in-water swimmer support swimmer.  These are friends of NYOW who are strong swimmers with extensive open water experience.

Please correspond with the race director Camilla at least 1 week before the event to offer your services as a Swim Angel. (camilla@nyopenwater.org)

For those of you requesting a Swim Angel, please let us know some background information on what type of support you are looking for.

I’ve heard that this is an easy 10K. Is that true?

Some years it is and some years it isn’t. Because of that, you should train and be prepared to swim a 10K in open water. This is a marathon swim in the Hudson River, so there can — and most likely will — be wind, chop, flotsam, and jetsam. Only you can decide if you are ready for this. However, there will be support in the river, kayakers to direct you, and we do plan around a favorable current (1 MPH) for swimmers as possible.

What is the average water temperature?

As always there are NO guarantees on water temperature but this swim has historically ranged from 70-78 F.

Is the water clean?

The health of the Hudson continues to improve and many of us enjoy swimming in her on a regular basis. Historical water quality reports can be found at riverkeeper.org.

Is there support in the water?

There will be a range of support including some or all of the following: boats, RHIBS, kayaks, and swim angels.

Are wetsuits allowed for this swim?

Yes

What if it rains?

Spuyten Duyvil swim is rain or shine unless there is risk of thunder and lightning, in which case all registrants will be notified by email. A blast will go out on Facebook, too.

No refunds, no transfers, no deferments.
